Default question regarding skills...

Hello.

I'm fairly new to the game, and although, i know that generally sends eyes rolling and shivers through the carpal tunnel. let me at least assure you i'm a quick study. and good at reading up on things.

I've read the general FAQ on this board, flipped through the manual, and generally done a little looking around... but haven't found an answer to my question.

basically... how many skills can you get? or more importantly. I seem to recall reading that you "buy" your skills with skill points. So, is there a point at which you have to choose carefully which skills you buy or be faced with the prospect of not being able to "aford" a higher level skill down the road.

my character is a warrior. and focusing on hammer skills. i'm currently level 5 and will more than likely pick up the magic class for a knockdown specialized hammer warrior. ...i don't care or know if this is a good idea. i just like big hammer weapons and smashing things. no real logic.

but to me... i want all the hammer skills. just to have them. i've looked around as to where to find them. and now want them.

but as i've read about where to get them, apparently you can get some skills from quests, some from bosses, and others from trainers.

how does it all work?

skills from a trainer? are those the ones you straight up "buy" with your skill points?

quests: ...are those free? or just given to you for doing the quest?

Bosses: do you get the skill for killing the boss? or need to do something to "learn" or otherwise glean the skill from the fight/encounter.

or do you buy all of them?

i know that, aside from hammer skills, there are tactics abilities, and then my secondary skills. i'll need some from all of them. i just don't want to waste any skill points on skills i either don't need... won't use later, or are generally worthless skills. if... at some point. you actually have to be careful on what you spend skill points on. because my inclination is to just gobble up hammer skills.

but i don't want to be out of skill points... needing the high end elite hammer attacks when i'm close to the level cap. or be out of points and need some crucial tactics skill or magic ability...that's pivital to my build setup.

i also don't want to go out and buy a skill... if questing for it, or getting it from some boss encounter means you get it for free. or if none of it's free. i really need to look at exactly which skills i want. ...so i want to consider this now. as apposed to rerolling a broken char later.

...any help with this question would be appreciated. if there's some link, or thread where this is all laid out... please just toss me a link. but if you're gonna type a response. try and give me detailed answers. or at least a coherent response.

thank you for your time... and sorry if this is a n00b question.

The cost of skills that you purchase increases to a maximum of 1,000 gold.

You can find out which skills are questable and which you have to buy here: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page just by clicking on the "Skills" link. Actually, this is a great site for finding out pretty much everything you want to know about the game.

Even though there is a level cap at 20, you still continue to earn skill points for each "level" beyond 20. As long as you continue to get experience, you should have no problem with skill points. However, some people complain about the gold cost. Elite skills have to be captured using a Capture Signet, which you will first learn about when you get to Lion's Arch, even though I don't believe there are any elite skills until you get to the desert.

So, take a look at www.guildwiki.org before you buy a skill and if it's not questable within the time frame you want to use it, then go ahead and buy it without worry.
